Born in Paris in 1850, Jean-François Raffaëlli began painting in 1870, and by 1876 had garnered the praise of influential critics with his compelling, realistic portrayals of the working classes. Among those responsible for a revival in color printmaking in the 1890s, Raffaëlli was awarded a gold medal for his prints at the Paris Exposition of 1900.

Raffaëlli made two trips to America, in 1895 and 1899, both times exhibiting work in Boston, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. In his career, spanning from 1976 to 1921, he produced over 180 prints.
