After earning an M.D. at the University of California, Joseph Goldyne foresook a career in medicine to pursue an M.F.A. at Harvard and an abiding passion for both art history and the creative process. His first solo exhibition, in 1973 at the Quay Gallery, San Francisco, was an immediate success, prefiguring the important exhibition of monoprints in 1982 at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian.
An artist seeking "the image and effect that will stimulate the eye, the mind, and the spirit" (Paul Cummings, former Adjunct Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and founder of The Print Collector's Newsletter), Goldyne today has mastered many forms of artistic expression, from oil painting through all the graphic media, including drawing, monotype, intaglio, monoprint, lithograph, and book illustration. Whatever the process, we invariably find his particular blend of visual beauty and art historical reference, executed with wit and unrivaled technical perfection. He achieves in his work a rich juxtaposition of artist and art historian, of observer and alchemist, of the literary and the visual worlds.
Goldyne has had numerous solo exhibitions in Jerusalem, London, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. His work is found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. and the New York Public Library, inter al.
